Newbie is four weeks old in this picture and working hard on his smile among other things. This smile was for his Mom.
Now I have to get one from him for me.
A small collection of the many good things in the life of this old sailor. These items may be current or from the past, if I liked them or am fond of them they are eligible to be here.
We started out this afternoon with a trip to the movies. Horton Hears A Who was the starring attraction. We were accompanied by two grandchildren, one age three the other age four. Both sat there and watched the entire movie basically moving only to ingest popcorn or to take a sip of my soda. They also liked some of the previews. The three year old was particularly impressed by the scenes showing sword fighters working on Narnia, The Caspian Prince. He said "wow" and then told his Aunt that the movie was not scary and he would be able to watch Narnia.
The USS Lake Erie (CG-70), launched a SM-3 missile designed to knock down incoming missiles (not orbiting satellites) at 10:26 p.m. EST. The Lake Erie hit the school bus sized target about three minutes later as the spacecraft traveled in polar orbit at more than 22 times the speed of sound or about 17,000 mph.

Some little known naval history: The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers!).
